Queering the Airwaves - Pride 2024 : 50 Years of Resistance
Dublin Digital Radio (ddr) proudly presents “Queering the Airwaves - Pride 2024: 50 Years of Resistance” broadcasting during PRIDE 2024 from Wednesday 26th June to Saturday 29th of June.
Queering the Airwaves: 50 Years of Resistance is an initiative by Dublin Digital Radio that aims to platform LGBTQ+ voices, organisations and activists, exploring the rich history of resistance and resilience within our community.
2024 marks the 50th Anniversary of Dublin Pride, tracing back to June 27, 1974, when the inaugural Pride demonstration in Dublin was organised by the Sexual Liberation Movement founded in 1973. As we mark half a century of Pride, we want to reflect on the roots of this movement, resist its corporatisation and co-option and refocus the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ liberation.
Through an open call Dublin Digital Radio has programmed over 25 hours of LGBTQ+ airtime - mixes to revolutionise the dance floor, explorations of queer histories, broadcasts envisioning radical futures and much much more.
Dublin Digital Radio serves as an independent platform, providing an alternative media outlet for our community. ddr is wholly funded by its members ensuring that it remains independent of corporate influence and is run democratically by its growing community.

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Dublin Pride, Dublin Digital Radio (ddr) proudly presents "Queering the Airwaves: 50 Years of Resistance," a special broadcast initiative running throughout the week leading up to Dublin Pride 2024. This initiative aims to reclaim the radical roots of Pride, providing a platform for LGBTQ+ voices, organisations, and activists to share their stories, music, and visions for the future.
With an incredible lineup of programming that will host over 25 hours of LGBTQ+ led airtime, Queering the Airwaves promises to be an exciting part of Pride 2024 in Dublin. The exciting programme will see a number of DJs presenting their first ever broadcast as well as some of ddr’s most established talent taking to the airwaves. This programme promises to offer something for everyone. The range of shows this year underlines diversity that makes up the queer community. Some examples from the programme include:
Queer Liberation in Mexico
This show will spotlight young Latin American queer producers, with a special emphasis on the contributions of Terry Holiday, a politically active trans Mexican woman. Through music and storytelling, the program will discuss the role of queer nightlife as a form of political resistance and community building. It will also reflect on the ongoing struggles for LGBTQ+ rights in Latin America and the importance of creating safe spaces for the queer community.
Queer Noise Narratives
This show will take listeners on a journey through noise and industrial music, linking these genres to the queer experience. Inspired by Joel Gibb's work on noise music as a form of queer expression, this show will feature music from pioneering artists like Throbbing Gristle and Coil to contemporary musicians such as Kavari and Genesis Fawn. The exploration will focus on how noise music, often seen as 'ugly' or 'wrong,' parallels the historical and ongoing marginalisation of queer identities.
Notes on Camp
"Notes on Camp" is a celebration of the camp sensibility in music. Expect a flamboyant mix of Broadway tunes, glamorous hits, and subversive anthems. From Bette Davis’s sharp wit to the extravagance of powdered wigs, this show revels in fantasy, escape, and the audacious declaration of self-identity. It's a tribute to the resilience and creativity of queer culture, wrapped in a cloak of humour and high drama. Ladies with an attitude. The higher the hair the closer to god. Life ain't worth a damn until you can say, hey world , I AM WHAT I AM.
God Awful Love
"God Awful Love" delves deep into the multifaceted realm of love, transcending conventional boundaries to offer a raw, authentic portrayal of its highs, lows, and complexities. Sarah Creighton-Keogh's poignant poetry captures the essence of love from a queer perspective, fearlessly confronting the nuances of human emotion. Rachel Kenny's intaglio etching prints serve as visual counterparts, enriching the narrative with layers of symbolism and depth. This show will captivate audiences with live poetry readings, bringing the narrative of "God Awful Love" to life through compelling performances.
Bombay Mix - Queer Asian Music Vibe
Queer Asian Pride Ireland presents "Bombay Mix," a show that dives into the rich history of Bollywood and South Indian music and its influence on queer culture in India. The show will feature a selection of tracks and discuss the longing for spaces that celebrate this genre. It will also explore the queer migrant experience, highlighting the intersections of music, identity, and community.
"The wide variety of shows that were submitted as part of QTA this year is a testament to the incredible diversity of the queer community and queer experience. It's vital that we continue to elevate queer voices and support our community. 50 years of Pride has offered us the opportunity to take stock of the progress that has been made and also acknowledge the work that is still to be done. Much of QTA's programming reflects this sentiment with explorations of queer history, political expression through punk music alongside moments of queer elation and joy."
