Sounding Out: Digital Infrastructures

Recently at dublin digital radio (ddr) we’ve been thinking about the digital tools that we use to communicate to each other, to the wider world and to communicate the work that we make - from social media, through google calendar to mixcloud.

As a member-run digital community radio station that is built on creating alternative spaces for cultures outside of the mainstream - we think it is important that our digital presence also reflects our values and beliefs. We know that there are lots of other organisations that share this interest with us, both in Ireland and further afield.

We would like to bring some of these people together for a conversation about ways we can make/support/use digital tools to create better digital spaces.

We are proposing to hold a meeting/workshop/hackathon on May 24th in Connolly Books and Online to explore the possibility of Digital Alternatives and hope you are interested in coming along. We would like to gather people with technical skills in web and software development as well as people involved in media, events and other community organisations.

To start we propose looking at three tools - a listing site, a wiki and a media archive.

We think a listing site that allows people to find and share events is a really useful tool for organising - whether it’s organising a gig, a meeting or an exhibition.

We think a wiki is a really useful tool for sharing information about what we are doing, why (and importantly) how - this is key to sharing the skills that we have, learning from others and ensuring that our organising is sustainable.

We think our archive - of audio for ddr, but of other media too - is an important for sharing the output we make but also something that we should have control over and that is an active site for exchange and production.

The proposed plan for the day is below.

Please feel free to come to all or any parts that you think are of interest.

We will have some refreshments on the day - so if you could let us know if you plan to come in person or online it would help us plan this. Register your interest here.

This work will also inform Seán Finnan's research at TU Dublin, a researcher looking at the needs of DIY online radio stations, and the development of these station’s capacities. As part of this workshop Seán will be asking for participant’s consent for their participation to be documented as part of his PhD and to inform his research. If for any reason you want to participate but are not comfortable having your input used in the research, just inform Seán on the day and he will ensure your input is removed from the recordings.
